Rose’s Sugarshack
Family-run, one plate at a time
The idea
Breakfast, the unhurried way.
Sugar Shack Cafe — known to regulars as Rose's Sugarshack — is a small, family-run breakfast diner on the corner of El Camino Real in San Clemente. Rose and her husband run the shop themselves: hand-scrambled eggs, stacked stuffed French toast, and a warm word for everyone who walks through the door. It's the kind of place surfers stop into on the way back from the point, still salty, still hungry.
There’s no drive-through, no laminated corporate menu, no rush. Just a small dining room with wood tables and terrazzo tabletops, a griddle that’s been going since seven, and Rose making sure everyone gets fed properly before they head back out into the day.

How it started
One shop, one family.
A corner shop, a griddle, and a plan
Rose and her husband took over a small storefront on El Camino Real with one idea: cook the way you'd cook for family, and never cut a corner to save a minute.
The regulars start showing up
Surfers on their way back from the point. Families after Sunday service. Folks who just wanted a plate that actually filled them up. Word got around the neighborhood fast.
Same shop, same hands, same warmth
The menu has grown — omelettes named for the streets and breaks nearby, a stuffed French toast people drive across town for — but the kitchen is still run by the same two hands it always was.
What we believe
Homemade isn’t a marketing word here.
Homemade, Always
Nothing comes out of a box. The gravy, the hash browns, the whipped cream on the French toast — Rose makes it herself, the same way she has for years.
Generous Portions
Plates come out stacked, not styled — this is a breakfast built for people who worked up an appetite before they got here.
Open Every Morning
Seven days a week, 7 AM to 2 PM. No reservations, no fuss — just show up and grab a table.
Small & Personal
It's a tiny shop, and that's the point. Rose knows the regulars' orders, jokes with everyone in line, and treats every table like family.

Behind the counter
Made by hand, every morning.
The hollandaise, the gravy, the whipped cream on the French toast — none of it comes out of a box. It’s a small kitchen and a short menu on purpose, so everything that leaves it can be made properly.
